Notes
Quite the “unique” but good and healthy recipe I believe. Japanese in origin it is basically a beef bowl and very simple to put together but full of flavor. The amounts below are for 4 servings.
Ingredients
- Flank Steak or Skirt Steak
- 4 eggs
- Green onions
- 2 medium onions
- Garlic
- 1 cup dashi stock
- 2 tablespoons Soy sauce
- 2 teaspoons Mirin
- 2 Tablespoons sugar
- 4 cups cooked white rice
- Sesame seeds
- MSG (Optional)
Steps
- Freeze your meat for 2 hours. This will make thinly slicing a lot easier
- After the meat is semi-frozen slice it into thin strips about 2 mm thick
- In a bowl, mix together the meat, soy sauce, MSG, Salt, and Black Pepper. Really mix the meat roughly and beat the shit out of it
- Let it sit refrigerated for up to 24 hours
- Prepare your rice
- Heat up a large pan and throw in some vegetable oil or any other neutral-flavored oil
- Prepare your dashi stock. I used Hondashi to make 1 cup. You can find this at any Asian grocery store
- Meanwhile, slice up your onions and mince your garlic, and green onions
- Add in onions then salt them, and cook for approximately 10 minutes on medium heat
- Add in garlic
- Turn up the heat to high and add in your meat to brown it
- After a few moments add in your dashi stock, mirin, sugar, and soy sauce
- Let it cook and reduce for a while. You want it to be saucy but not watery. To make this go by faster or to get a thicker sauce you can add a little bit of cornstarch
- Fry up your egg in a separate pan to desired egg cooked-ness
- Serve some of the Gyudon atop a bed of rice and garnish with sesame seeds and green onions
- Enjoy.
